Choosing The Right Christening Gown
January 30, 2008 – 8:51 amThe Christening of your baby boy or girl will forever be remembered as one of the most beautiful, holy events of your lifetime. Choosing the right Christening gown is almost as important as the event itself. With so many websites and stores to choose a gown from, it’s a tough decision to choose the dress that will reflect the true essence and beauty of the event. There are many options to take into account when choosing a gown; such as the material of the dress, its embellishments, the length, what accessories it comes with, matching bonnets, and undergarments. You must also consider if a Christening suit for your little boy would be more appropriate than a gown. Ultimately, choosing the right gown or suit is all about what the parents’ would prefer.
The fabric of the gown or suit should be extremely soft so that your baby’s skin is not irritated or uncomfortable in any way. Two of the best fabrics to choose from are satin or silk. Satin has an extremely soft feel to it and shows up beautifully in photographs, as does silk. Be careful with too many embellishments around the neck of the gown or suit, as it may irritate your baby’s skin. A lot of silk material will have what are called “slubs” in it. “Slubs” are just an inherent part of the fibers and should not be mistaken for flaws. Make sure that if you have a bonnet, it matches the material and color of the dress or suit.
Although Christening gowns and suits can be quite expensive due to how ornate and intricate they are, the more beautiful the gown is, the more beautiful the photographs will turn out. Most gowns can run anywhere from $100 to $400 depending on how elaborate they’re designed, while most Christening suits run anywhere from $100 to just over $200. When choosing the gown or suit, make sure to see if a matching bonnet, matching booties or any other accessories are included. If not, then the price can go up with the extra accessories you’ll have to purchase. The gown or suit that you choose can be passed down from generation to generation if carefully preserved in a zippered vinyl bag and hung on a padded hanger. Not only will the memories last forever, but the gown or suit can as well.
